BREAKING: Akpata Emerges New NBA President

Olumide Akpata has emerged the new President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), defeating two other candidates in the election concluded on Thursday.

 

Akpata, the only candidate who was not a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) at the election, defeated Babatunde Ajibade and Julius Adesina, both Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

 

Akpata won the 2020 elections with 1,002 votes representing 54.8% of the vote cast to defeat Babatunde Ajibade who polled 808 votes and Julius Adesina who scored 679 votes. Akpata floored two contenders at the poll: Babatunde Ajibade who polled 808 votes and Julius Adesina who claimed 679 votes.

 

According to AIT, Akpata is the first president of the association to emerge from the outer bar in 30 years. However, a human rights activist who is also a lawyer, Chidi Odinkalu, has accused the electoral process of being occasioned by rigging and manipulation.
